The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has launched a new initiative called NEMA that aims to support the UAE government in achieving its goal of zero food waste. This initiative is part of the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, which reflects President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's vision to reduce food waste, promote sustainable practices, and encourage social responsibility across the food supply chain.
As an advocate of food sustainability, I am excited to share with you the exciting details of this program. With its tagline "Never Ever Waste Food," NEMA seeks to raise awareness about food waste in the UAE and encourage individuals and businesses to adopt sustainable food consumption practices. What sets NEMA apart is its approach of tackling the issue from both the consumption and production sides.
Why is there a need for such a program? Globally, food waste is a significant issue, and the UAE is no exception. According to a study by the Dubai Municipality, the UAE produces about 3.8 million tonnes of food waste annually. This not only wastes resources and money but also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and landfills.
Through raising awareness about food waste and promoting sustainable practices, NEMA takes a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and responsible food system in the UAE. With initiatives like NEMA and WIN Sustainably, we can all contribute to reducing food waste and promoting a more sustainable future. NEMA aims to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030 by changing people's attitudes towards buying and consuming food.
WIN Sustainably, the UAE's first food sustainable platform, supports the MOCCAE's mission to reduce food waste by redistributing unsold food from businesses to consumers at reduced prices. The application will be available on Google Play and Apple Store from June 1, 2023, and interested food businesses can request early access on the website www.winsustainably.com.
WIN Sustainably's model aims to benefit everyone, including businesses, consumers, the environment, and the government. The platform tracks the amount of unsold food saved and the revenue gained by F&B businesses from what would otherwise be sunk costs. For consumers, it shows them how much money and meals they have saved progressively.
It is also commendable that WIN Sustainably has pledged to support NEMA by saving 500 meals by the end of the year, offering surplus food to consumers at discounted prices, and building a community of people interested in adopting a sustainable lifestyle
